At 10pm on Saturday, most parking meters downtown turn off until Monday morning, which means parking becomes free. That means if you can park at a metered spot around 8pm, you'd pay 2 hrs of metered parking ($4.60) and be able to leave the car till whenever you want on Sunday, instead of paying expensive garage rates (abt $40 for the Wharf).

Parking garages downtown are largely empty on weekend (spooky, actually), but expensive. Also, last few times we were able to easily find streetside parking on the Mall (both times it was on Sunday, around 10am). But generally, if you stay in a hotel in DC, it's much easier (and cheaper) to take a bus or a subway.

    6. Re: Parking for a tourist in DC. If you insist on not changing hotels (which is a huge mistake, IMO), there is a convenient, secure (with guards who can check your car if they want) garage at the RRB/ITC (Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center) that is $23 on weekdays, $13 on weekends for parking.
