Safeway can have some decent sales, but even some sale items are higher than you would think and most of the stuff not on sale is way higher than what you are used to paying. We always stop at Costco to purchase most of our long term staples and all of our meat.
I don't know of any Safeway in Girdwood. There's a Crow Creek Mercantile (maybe they've an affiliation of some sort). I'd say grocery-wise, they'd be a minimalist. Check them out on google maps here: http://goo.gl/maps/HZcjR. or give them a call & ask: (907) 783-3900
If you want to feel as if you've stepped into any mainland Safeway store - then go to Safeway - the only difference is the prices! They have all the things that you would expect anywhere on the mainland. If you use your "Safeway" card you can save on the prices on some items.
