First, it is a reservation, not a guarantee. They are under no obligation to provide you anything. If the car isn't there, they can't make it appear. They can refund your money and not even have to apologize. Now typically the bigger companies will offer you an alternative.
A premium elite suv at Alamo is a x3 or similar which would put a Q3 or Volvo XC 40 in that category. A Caddy XT6 would be mid size. The OP was lucky to get a free upgrade.
You will only get a free upgrade if there are no cars left in the category you have booked. You can't tip the person on the barrier on the way out as by then you will have your car. The best way to get the category of car you want is to book it!
