Thanks everyone. I actually renewed my Costco membership and wound up saving over $300 for the car rental.I calculated a one way to Key Largo/Islamorada and getting another one way from Islamorada to Key West a few days later and that would have saved another $200.
For sure Avis and Midnight Sun offer one-ways to Whittier (for a hefty drop off fee). There are a couple more companies but I can't recall off the top of my head--check the thread about one-ways under Top Questions, right side of the page while on a computer.
All of the accomodations, really perhaps other than Fairbanks and Anchorage, require a car. I have been looking and am shocked at the cost to rent a car one way from Fairbanks to Seward. Around $180 per day for the smallest car (Hertz seems to be the only company in Seward)!
The major rentals wouldn't consider it for August/September even with a hefty drop off charge. Then I found US24hr Car Rental. Bart, 907-276-6050. His company is used to one way trips particularly for military families changing bases.
