It's a bit fiddly to get the balance in both ears, try pushing it partly into the socket until it balances out. I also prefer to use my own headphones.
You can use single plug headphones on United IFE systems. Just insert the single plug into the larger of the two sockets. It works fine. My Bose two pin adapter works fine in UA's sockets but it's not needed. Edited: 6 years ago
