We used a German Mastercard to register on SmartEx last week and then successfully booked a train journey with Hayatoku 21 tickets for Shin Osaka to Tokyo, so it must accept some Mastercards. Reply. We were able to use our Visa for many other Japan -related bookings with the extra layer of security with no problem. Reply.

    The Smart-Ex only accepts Mastercard. If you enter a Visa card or Amex, the site will j say that the credit card is invalid. No message saying that Visa and AMEX are not accepted. The site may accept other cards but Mastercard is accepted. After this, everything is smooth sailing.
