Prices are astounding to rent a car for a week to drive down the CA coast from SFO to LAX. Have tried different airports (leaving from San Jose rather than San Francisco, for example), in-city vs airport, reversing direction from LA up to SF instead of southbound, etc. Currently, the cheapest going rate is a penalty that is about $800.

Using the first time user promo code, I got transfer for $29 , fixed price. Pre-booked it on the app about 3 weeks prior. Very easy to use and a real smooth service.
Don't focus on the DROP OFF fee; look at the TOTAL COST of the car rental since some companies have large drop-off fees while others have low drop off fees (but have a much higher daily rate).
1. Re: Los Angeles to SFO via US Route 1. Yes, you should absolutely split this drive into 2 days - or longer. This isn't a 1 day drive. As you can see from your map, the Google estimate is 9.5 hours of wheels turning - add an hour to the estimate, plus any stops you make and you can see that this is not a 1 day drive.
4. Re: One way car rental - San Fran to LA. 15 years ago. We are doing a one-way rental originating in San Diego and dropping off in SF. Prices are very high. Every major car rental company charges a drop off fee. The cheapest by far - of the major rental companies - has been Dollar, even including their $175 fee.
