    6 years ago. Google maps works pretty well in France, I'd say as well as it does in the US. You either need a data plan or to download offline maps (or both). Offline maps will only give driving directions I think, not walking or public transport.

    I use google maps regularly and find it to be pretty accurate. It is possible to download the maps using free wifi, but you will need data at the start of navigation, but you can turn it off once underway - but you won't get traffic updates or alternative routes that way.

    I am wondering if, as I approach the point at which I need to decide between two border crossings (Canada-USA), I could rely on the Google maps live driving instructions to adjust if the wait time at one crossing were long enough that the other crossing would result in a faster overall journey?
