6 years ago. Google maps works pretty well in France, I'd say as well as it does in the US. You either need a data plan or to download offline maps (or both). Offline maps will only give driving directions I think, not walking or public transport.

A couple times seems 'long' to me so I went to google maps & all times were significantly shorter (yippee!).
In its current iteration navigation is not available for transit, only a list of directions is provided. The transit directions are available in 400 cities around the world. Offline guidance. Once the user has searched for a destination, the map will cache along the intended route.
MapQuest provides some extent of street-level detail or driving directions for a variety of countries. Users can check if their country is available using a dropdown menu on the MapQuest home page. The company offers a free mobile app for Android and iOS that features POI search, voice-guided navigation, real-time traffic and other features.
Googlemaps will be fine, though they underestimate driving times a bit. Googlemaps show current road closures, but you can double check them at https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/highway-conditions/ I recommend you download Google maps for offline use.
I use google maps regularly and find it to be pretty accurate. It is possible to download the maps using free wifi, but you will need data at the start of navigation, but you can turn it off once underway - but you won't get traffic updates or alternative routes that way.

I am wondering if, as I approach the point at which I need to decide between two border crossings (Canada-USA), I could rely on the Google maps live driving instructions to adjust if the wait time at one crossing were long enough that the other crossing would result in a faster overall journey?
